We exist as a fellowship to love God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and serve Him forever, as He is the only one worthy to worship with all of our life. Our earnest desire is to pursue the Lord and honor Him in everything we do, submitting our lives to His will revealed in the Scriptures, and walk in a life of holy, loving, joyful obedience to Christ Jesus our Lord.
We hold to the truth that people are saved by Grace alone, through Faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, for the glory of God alone. We are a non-denominational, reformed, baptistic, evangelistic church that believes in the sovereignty of God over all things, the responsibility of man to repent and believe the Gospel, and the need for the church to live godly, uncompromising lives in the midst of a godless and compromising generation.
Not only do we desire to say "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." (Phillipians 1:21), but also to seek that others may know this same love and turn to the One who can save them from the awful, impending and just wrath of God upon them for their life of sinful, wicked and willing disobedience. The fields are white to the harvest, and we rejoice that our Lord has given us a part in fulfilling His great commission by laboring in the fields of Corpus Christi.
Sovereign Grace Community Church was started through the Lord's providence in August of 2008 by the men and women of Grace Community Church of San Antonio, Texas. The original fellowship formed with several families of similar doctrinal persuasions seeking a reformed church based upon the Word of God, with a passion for Christ, and teaching the full counsel of the Scriptures.
The intent of the leadership in San Antonio and the Christians in Corpus Christi was, from the start, to plant the church in one of the needier parts of the city and seek to serve the poor. The church has since grown as an evangelistic inner-city ministry with a desire for the true, Biblical and historical Gospel of Jesus Christ to be proclaimed throughout Corpus Christi, the Coastal Bend and the world.
The church became independent from GCC in July of 2010 and was no longer considered an extension ministry of GCC but a fellow church of like-minded believers. Following a year of testing various men and examining them for the potential to serve as elders over the church, SGCC in conjunction with the leadership at GCC ordained their first two elders, Mark Summers and Dan Sem, in October of 2011.
It is our hope and frequent prayer that the Lord would be pleased to do a work in Corpus Christi, its churches, its streets, and its neighborhoods, by saving multitudes lost in false religion, sinful lives and vain pursuits. Many in this city believe themselves to be saved because of a prayer they prayed, a baptism they received, a church they give money to, or an experience they had; but the power and evidence of the working of the Spirit of God is absent from their lives and they walk in open disobedience to Christ's commands.
We are committed to ministering among those in the darkest parts of this city, where the Gospel is desperately needed, where the Love of Christ is not understood. We strive to be faithful in evangelism across the city, service ministries to those in need, and the consistent study and preaching of the Word of God. We strongly support overseas missions in prayer and finances, but just as strongly believe the need of our generation is just as great in fallen America as it is in almost any other foreign country in this world. We welcome all of a like mind and faith to join us in this hope and come labor with us in Corpus Christi, Texas.
We take the belief and study of Biblical doctrine seriously, as what a person believes influences the whole of their life and their eternity. We endeavor to believe and preach a Biblical, Christ-centered theology rooted in the Scriptures as the final authority over all religious traditions and creeds. We believe God's Word is sufficient for the needs of God's people and remains inerrant and inspired from its original manuscripts faithfully translated down through the centuries.
Our body of doctrine is most closely aligned with reformed baptist views and a general doctrinal statement of our church is available here. We would be in general agreement with most statements in the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. However, with those who differ on doctrinal points we would say along with the reformer John Calvin "In essentials unity, in nonessentials charity, in all things Jesus Christ."
We strive to systematically study the Word of God and emphasize expository preaching with Jesus Christ as the center and grand theme. We aim to work verse-by-verse through different books of the Bible as our main method of teaching. However, there are occasions that also require topical approaches to certain subjects as well. Anyone interested in our Church's teachings is encouraged to listen to some of the sermons on the RESOURCES tab and hear for themselves.
